SHOW 6

OCTOBER 12, 2002: Des Moines Civic Center, Des Moines, IA

Due to poor responses, I haven't made the last two months of downloads a "vote for" download. However, I am going to give this another try. I really appreciate feedback from you, and with this, the 6th download of the year, I think it's a good time to try again. If you haven't yet registered for the 4thellamas.com message board, please do so now. After you do, go to the downloads thread and post some feedback on this show, and then take a moment to vote for the download you would like to see released in November. Please try to vote by the 28th. After you've voted, you can post a request for a future download. Remember, this site will be as good as you help make it!

In the summer of 2002, after a several months of being unemployed, I took a job at Ultimate Electronics. A three-week training period would begin in late September, and I would start working at the store in October. To celebrate, I asked my manager to let me have a couple days to do a swing with Cowboy Junkies, hitting shows in Nebraska and Iowa. I wasn't sure how much time I would have to travel with the band with the new job and wanted to get a last swing in. I drove out to Nebraska on Friday afternoon, found a hotel and went to the show at The Music Box, which was an unmitigated disaster featuring the worst geese ever. The band soldiered on and played well, but you know it's a bad night for geese when someone from the crowd gets up and tells her fellow concert-goers that she hopes they will be quiet during the Junkies after the opening act finishes.

The next day, I drove out to Des Moines, again getting a hotel. I went to soundcheck and then found a nice little out-of-the-way Italian place whose name I can't remember for dinner. The venue was very nice, an expansive little theater, and seemed promising for a quiet show, which in fact is what happened. The audience was beautifully appreciative, and the band turned in an absolutely stunning performance, filled with some rarely-played gems. From the first notes of the show opener, Powderfinger, it was apparent that this would be a special night. The highlight for me was Witches, making the drive out and the previous night's geese-fest all worth it. There isn't a wasted moment in this entire show, and right after it ended I knew it would always be a favorite.

This is the first show from the lower-key 2002 tour in the SOTM download series. I hope you like it as much as I enjoyed it!
