SHOW
2.7a and b
April 15, 1996: 9:30 Club -
Washington, D.C.
AND
June 11, 2002: Coach House - San Juan
Capistrano, CA
Well, the voting
was close again this month, and finally ended up split dead even
between two of the three shows that were
offered for voting in the
Vote for Show 2.7 thread on the message boards.
Speaking of voting, I'll
make my monthly request, so here it is: if you haven't
yet registered for the
4thellamas.com message board, please do so now. After you do, go to
the downloads thread and
post some
feedback on these shows, and then take a moment to
vote for the
download you would like to see next, which, due to some
craziness with my day job, may not be till January, but I'll try for
December. Please try
to vote by the 27th. After you've voted, you can
post a request
for a future download. Remember, this site will be as good as
you help make it!
So, the first show
is one that Luca has been requesting for some time, and comes from
the Lay It Down tour, an always special one. Of course, most of you
seem to prefer to see the older shows released anyway, so that isn't
all that surprising.
The recording here
has got some great performances. At one point, Margo quips to the
audience, "I don't think Mike has played this well all tour." "Just
Want to See" has a great energy to it, and the "Powerfinger" is
beautifully solemn.
I've always felt
that "Something More Besides You" is one the best songs the band has
ever done, proven by how good it sounds both electric and acoustic.
It's actually one of my four favorite Junkies' songs (the others are
"Ring on the Sill," "Witches," and "Notes Falling Slow.") Here
again, Mike shines, and the "Working on a Building" is a perfect
closer to an excellent show.
Thanks to Luca for
lobbying for this one!

AND NOW, for show
2.7b!!! This too came from the
post a request
for a future download thread, and was originally requested by
Mark K. The 2002 tour had a lot of interesting performances, and
this one is right up there.
First, I'd have to
say that any show that has both "No Birds Today" AND "You Will Be
Loved Again" is going to be on my personal radar. "No Birds" is such
a haunting song, and Margo breathes sadness into it.
The second
highlight of the show is the mini-acoustic set. The band tends to
fall into a rut with that, often playing the same songs each tour, but this
night they did acoustic versions of "Good Friday" and "Leaving
Normal," the latter a personal favorite of mine. I think it has
great lyrics, and I love the movie that they originally wrote it
for.
Finally, the "I'll
Never Get Out of These Blues Alive" encore is pretty amazing. 2002
shows have been rather underrepresented in the downloads; we might
have to change that!
So pull up a
chair, spend a night downloading these two shows, and then listen. And if
you haven't yet registered
for the 4thellamas.com message board, please do so while you're
waiting for your downloads to complete. That way you can
vote for the
download you want as a Christmas present!
