SHOW 2.12a and b

April 28, 1996: State Theater - Minneapolis, MN

AND

March 9, 2003: Brock Theater for the Arts - St. Catherines, ON

Well, the voting was split evenly this month between two of the three shows that were offered for voting in the Vote for Show 2.12 thread on the message boards, so you get them both!

Speaking of voting, I'll make my monthly request, so here it is: if you haven't yet registered for the 4thellamas.com message board, please do so now. After you do, go to the downloads thread and post some feedback on this show, and then take a moment to vote for the download you would like to see released in July. Please try to vote by the 27th. After you've voted, you can post a request for a future download. Remember, this site will be as good as you help make it!

So, the first show is an oldie, again from the "Lay It Down" tour. The sound quality is quite good for an older show. The setlists were pretty standard on this tour, and the "Misguided-Mine" double appeared almost every night, though that didn't lessen its impact.

One highlight is the acoustic rendition of "First Recollection." Hearing the band rework this rocker into a stark haunting ballad makes you realize just how good a songwriter Michael Timmins is.

The encore features two of my favorite songs, "Something More" and "Working," and both are played strongly here.

Enjoy this one; older shows do seem to have something magical!

AND NOW, for show 2.12b!!!

I love the 2003 tour. There was something really sweet about getting two different sets, the first an acoustic set and the second an electric set. It really felt like "An Evening With."

This particular show was recorded in Canada, and has a lot of gems. The "Mining For Gold" that opens is about as good as you can get live. Hearing "Pale Sun" and "Leaving Normal" acoustic is a rare treat. The latter tune in particular is one of my favorites. "Ikea Parking Lot" was played at a handful of shows on this tour and then disappeared from the rotation, and never made it to the album.

For the electric set, you start to see the development of "Why this One" into a live showstopper, and of course the majestic "Lost My Driving Wheel" reappeared in the bands shows at this time. I also think opening this set with "Helpless" is a bold stroke.

This is a great show, and I hope you enjoy it!
