SHOW

JULY 11, 1996: Casino Ballroom - Hampton

Responses on the
voting have leveled off. It seems a loyal cadre of you want to help
push certain shows and years, while the rest of you, the silent
majority, are content to just accept whatever is thrown your way. I
confess myself surprised at this; if someone, when the Dead started
Dick's Picks, had given me a chance to vote on each show, I'd have
been all over it, but I guess that's neither here nor there. I'm
glad that everyone seems to like the concept, enjoys the shows, and
that some of you give feedback occasionally. I'll still give a push
to increase it each month however, so here it is: if you haven't
yet registered for the
4thellamas.com message board, please do so now. After you do, go to
the downloads thread and
post some
feedback on this show, and then take a moment to
vote for the
download you would like to see released in March. Please try
to vote by the 27th. After you've voted, you can
post a request
for a future download. Remember, this site will be as good as
you help make it!
This month, the
voters spoke for the older shows. I had offered one show from 2000
and one from 2001 in the options, but most wanted older vintages,
and spoke loudly in favor of it. So, here I present the second show
from the 1996 tour to be released in the Show of the Month, July 11,
1996.
This tour was in
support of the Lay It Down album, one of the most solid releases the
band put out. One highlight of the album was "Angel Mine." It seems
fans hadn't heard enough of the tragic heroine of "Misguided Angel"
from the band's defining album "Trinity Sessions," and people had
asked what she had decided and what had happened to her. "Angel
Mine" is the response to that question. A cynic might note that the
band segued into "Bea's Song: (River Song Trilogy, part II) from
Angel Mine, and that song would later be finished off by "Dragging
Hooks: River Song Trilogy, part III), but I'll remain hopeful!
This show also includes a couple of mid-set acoustic numbers; I
really like the acoustic "Sun Comes Up," and "Powderfinger" is
haunting as an acoustic number.
Another interesting aspect of this show is that it's in a very
low-key arena. The band always has played in some out-of-the-way
places, mixing in larger, more known arenas. I always like the
smaller venues, at a preference.
I hope you all
enjoy this excellent show, and keep the votes coming!!
